Lesson Planning:
For lesson planning assignment, I have selected
following 5 components, which I will focus in my future teaching:
1. Characteristics
of Adult Learners
2. Creating
a Positive learning Environment
3. Motivational
Techniques
4. Assessment
5. Instructional
Strategies
1. Characteristics of Adult
Learners
Why I selected this Characteristic?
Respect for diversity in adult learners is
important to me.
How it will improve my instructions:
I will make simple and effective lesson plans being
thoughtful of visible characteristics, as explained by Malcolm Knowles, that adults
are autonomous and self-directed, they bring a foundation of life experience
and knowledge with them, they are goal-oriented and relevancy-oriented, they
are practical and they deserve lot of respect especially due to their wealth of
knowledge and experience they bring in the learning group. Especially in
Canada, I will also respect ethno-cultural, western and non-western, communal
and holistic, and also neuro-anthropological characteristics of learners which
are unique and very important.
2. Creating
a Positive learning Environment
Why I selected this Characteristic?
Creating a positive learning environment is a key
to enhance student motivation.
How it will improve my instructions:
By using a variety of teaching techniques and
building strong connections with students, I will inspire adult learners to
strive for their personal best. I will get to know my students by speaking to
them using their first names and through surveys. Light humour, personable
attitude and respecting their physical setting are helpful in creating a
positive climate in the classroom. Non-verbal encouragements, eye contact and
reading the audience responses if they are bored, lost or anxious is very
important and giving breaks in lengthy classes refreshes their energy.

3. Motivational Techniques:
Why I selected this Characteristic?
Students obtain good grades and they are engaged in
the subject with passion, interest, and exuberance.
How it will improve my instructions:
Once basic needs are met, I will motivate students
to realize the personal satisfaction that comes from achievement. Yes,
there are extrinsic factors that affect adult learners pursue education to
advance in a career, to earn more money, and to gain some prestige that may
come with a higher degree. But, without ignoring these practical issues, if
students can also see how their education can make a difference in their
self-esteem and quality of their life will start to tap into their intrinsic
motivation.

4. Assessment:
Why I selected this Characteristic?
Assessment keeps the learners motivated and helps
them achieve their goals.
How it will improve my instructions:
I will use motivational framework to assess the
adults’ performance in culturally responsive teaching. Grades could be
meaningless for adults, and may be a threat of receiving low grades actually is
a de-motivator to learning. Some people drop a class because they worry about
the grades rather than what they could learn. Assessing the learner with
learning contracts, portfolios, or rubrics could strengthen this part of
assessments. Providing Effective Feedback could be used without
brainers. Feedback must be specific, constructive, prompt, positive, personal,
and frequent enough to aid learning.

5. Instructional
Strategies:
Why I selected this Characteristic?
Effective instructional strategies can move the
student from a reluctant learner to an engaged learner that is intrinsically
motivated.
How it will improve my instructions:
I will first know their learning expectations and
goals, and then positively engage the students using instructional materials,
case studies, and activities. Media clips, field trips, inviting experts and
guest speakers will enhance their learning and outcomes. I will teach students
to reflect and take control over their own learning by using weekly reflections
to solicit feedback about their own performance and where they need to improve,
and empower students by teaching them where to find materials and how to use
resources.
